Where's the Creme de Violette? Without it, no violet color as in the photo.

Sandhya and BobAz are both right. Without the creme de violette this isn't an Aviation, it's an Allen cocktail with too much lemon juice. An Allen is a fine cocktail in its own right, but the creme de violette that makes it an Aviation puts it over the top. I'd also add a good maraschino cherry, like one from Luxardo or Toschi, instead of the lemon twist in the picture. A twist is pretty. A cherry is pretty and tasty.

creme de violette is essential! the liquor.com aviation recipe is the best imo: 2oz gin 0.5oz maraschino 0.25oz creme de violette 0.75oz lemon juice (or to taste)

Can this recipe be updated to add the crème de violette back in?

I suggest adding a little Luxardo cherry juice for color and flavor. And, of course, the cherry itself for a garnish.

Aviation is a great drink, but this isn’t how I make it. Difford’s version: 1 3/4 ounce gin, 1/2 ounce Luxardo, 1/2 ounce lemon juice, 1/4 ounce creme de violet, and 1/4 ounce chilled water. The creme de violet defines the drink, in my opinion, both in flavor and appearance. The drink should evoke the half an hour astride dusk and night, viewed through an oval portal, thousands of feet above the clouds. (Forget air travel today.) A perfect accompaniment is Erroll Garner playing Misty.
