The Metropolitan cocktail is, essentially, a manhattan in which the whiskey is swapped out for brandy. Gin Fizz — a Harlem club evocative of the Jazz Age — offers this alluring riff on it, laced with Chartreuse and, if you like, a touch of absinthe, too. Serving it in a snifter is an elegant touch — it cleverly telegraphs the presence of brandy — and the orange-raspberry-rosemary garnish adds both flavor and glamour. —Rosie Schaap

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all ingredients except garnishes, and stir. Strain into a brandy sifter.

  2. Step 2

To garnish, affix the orange peel and the raspberry to the rosemary sprig, as though it were a cocktail pick. Add to the drink.

  3. Optional Step With Absinthe

    1. Step 3

Before straining the cocktail into the snifter, add ice to snifter, then swirl the absinthe in it to coat the glass. Let it sit for about 30 seconds to chill, then discard the ice.

believe it or not - it works well with Christian Brothers Brandy

Is the snifter just for looks?

Really nice twist - chartreuse (if you can find it...) is nicely floral/herbal, absinthe anisey -I did a cherry vs the other garnishes, which worked reall well.

A quarter oz of absinthe is too much, overpowers the other flavors in the drink. Maybe they meant a quarter teaspoon or just a spritz in the glass? Now I have to make another round to try it without the absinthe….
