This refreshing drink was created by the bartender Rene Dominguez and popularized in the '00s at the Shady Lady Saloon in Sacramento. It has become so popular in the city that a canned version was released in 2017. —Robert Simonson

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Combine gin, juice, syrup, liqueur and 3 cucumber slices in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. Shake until chilled, about 15 seconds. Pour through a double strainer into a Collins glass filled with ice. Top with soda water, about two ounces. Garnish with a few cucumber slices.

Tip
  • To make simple syrup, warm 1 cup sugar in 1 cup water in a saucepan over low heat until dissolved. Cool to room temperature before using. (There will be extra syrup; refrigerate if not using immediately.)

Yes, half the syrup. Also, I made a large batch with everything but the soda and set it with sliced cucumber in the freezer overnight. Then I was able to just pour over ice and top with soda. A large crowd was very pleased.

Start with no syrup and add slowly. Less than half for my taste.

I think it helps to shake for 15 seconds so that the cucumber gets muddled and its flavor is released.

Has anyone made this as a batch cocktail? I’m considering making this for a party.

Add some mint and reduce the simple syrup. Perfect.

Great cocktail! Very refreshing. Experiment with swapping out the st. Germain with chambord!
