A mixture of rye whiskey and amaro, with the addition of bitters, sets this simply made cocktail on the road to a manhattan. But then there are detours: the chocolate liqueur to add a mellow accent, and the cardamom for a hint of spice. I also tried substituting coffee liqueur for the chocolate, with great success. It is from the 18th Room in New York, where it is called Before Night Falls. —Florence Fabricant

I make this as a dessert cocktail at the bar I work in and people LOVE it! I make it exactly as written, but find the brand of creme de cacao makes a big difference in the overall flavor. Highly recommend this drink!

Tried this with Cynar and it was absolutely perfect, like a very dark chocolate bar made into a drink. This is going to become a new standby dessert drink for me.

Delicious! Also good with a bit of amargo de chile for a bit of a spicy chocolate taste. Definitely use Tempus Fugit Creme de cacao.

One of the most delightfully complex and well balanced cocktails I've mixed in a while! I tried a version with both Rittenhouse Rye and Redbreast Irish Whiskey and both did not disappoint. I must recommend Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao over the more basic stuff - it is out of the world and really elevates the drink. This was my first time trying Averna from the Amaro family... and it really does balance perfectly with all the other flavors. This is a hedonist/foodie dream of a cocktail. :-)

Loved this - used Rittenhouse, Averna, Marie Brizard, and Angostura. Definitely needs a higher proof rye. Can’t wait to try with the Bittermans recommended.
