Ingredients
- 1scant teaspoon sugar (I like brown sugar, but use what you’ve got)
- A few dashes of Angostura or orange bitters
- 2ounces bourbon or rye whiskey

Put the sugar in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass. Douse it with the bitters. Add ice and pour in the whiskey.

Let me introduce what I like to call the Kentucky Maple Leaf. In a glass mix 1.5 tablespoons of Maple Syrup with 3-4 dashes of bitters and ~4 ounces of bourbon. Stir with ice. Easy as it comes.
I love the idea of going “lazy.” I also make a lazy old fashioned, but I’m not a fan of added sugar, in the traditional sense. Instead, I’ll muddle a cherry, to taste (I like Amerena brand, in syrup). The cherry sweetness is all I need. And of course Angostura bitters. I call it the “Cherrylicious.” Cheers.
The photo shows lemon peel, omitted in the recipe but indispensable! Orange peel works very well, too, and is perhaps more traditional. The peel should be twisted over the drink to express the oil and then dropped in (lemon being stronger than orange, I would use a smaller peel of lemon than shown in the photo). And a full-bodied bourbon would be my choice.
I like my Old Fashioned with simple syrup (I make my own, with brown sugar. It's called simple syrup for a reason!). Lately, I've been using a scant teaspoon of maple syrup, 3 - 4 dashes of bitters, a very thin slice of fresh orange, halved, and a cherry. Two "normal" ice cubes. 2 shot glasses of bourbon. Very yummy!
I hate to mangle an orange and have it hanging around so I use orange flower water. Recipe: ¼ tsp simple syrup, seven dashes angostura bitters, seven dashes orange flower water, one luxardo cherry, all over one large ice cube, pour rye whiskey to cover ice. Stir. Enjoy.
I love a good Old Fashioned. Forget the sugar, use 3 Luxardo cherries. Put them on a skewer and enjoy them as you drink. Forget the orange peel. Thinly slice an orange, put them on a baking sheet in your air fryer or convection oven until they are dried. Put one in your drink and eat it at the very end if you like. Yum.
