Preparation

  1. Step 1

Pick the rice clean and wash several times. Drain thoroughly and place in a 2½-quart microwave-proof dish. Add 2¼ cups of water and mix well.

  2. Step 2

Cook, uncovered, at 100 percent power in a 650- to 700-watt microwave carousel oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until most of the water is absorbed and the top of the rice is covered with steamy holes. Stir twice during the cooking time.

  3. Step 3

Cover and continue cooking at 100 percent power for 4 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and soft. Remove from the oven and set aside, covered, for 5 minutes. Uncover, lightly fluff the rice with a fork and serve.

How about directions for a 1200 Watt microwave?

Came out perfect, right on time. A cinch, finally.

So...with this method it takes about 19 minutes to cook? And it takes 15-20 to cook on the stovetop, right? I guess if a microwave is all you have, then this is a great recipe. But it's not much of a time-saver...

Perfect Basmati on stovetop method: 1 part rice : 2 parts water Pinch of salt (optional considering this recipe) Bring to a boil in a suitably sized saucepan. Stir once with a wooden utensil, then cover immediately and cook on low heat undisturbed (NO stirring and lid on) for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and let sit (again undisturbed) on the stove for 5 minutes. = 15 min. perfectly cooked loose grain basmati. Also try 1:2 rice and chicken stock (no extra salt!).

How about brown basmati?

Can this be doubled?
