Ingredients that make eyes water and noses run turn out to be very useful in relieving cold and flu symptoms — so chicken soup made with hot, pungent additions works better than recipes that are more bland. That explains the fair amount of heat in this recipe, which can be assembled quickly, even by someone who is feeling pretty rotten (better yet, get someone to make it for you). Sip this slowly from a favorite mug on the couch, blankets tucked around you, and feel better soon.

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Combine the stock, garlic, jalapenos and herbs in a saucepan, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, and simmer until the garlic is very soft, about 30 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Transfer to a blender, and puree until smooth. Season with salt, and serve in mugs, garnished with the Parmigiano-Reggiano or pepper Jack cheese if you're up to it.

I get it. That much garlic will make you forget about how bad you feel because you'll be consumed by all the gas you expel. Best eaten alone. And vampires won't come near you either!

I initially read the title not as 'you will get better' soup, but you will get 'better soup'-thought it was a technique for making better soup. I think I prefer Nigella Lawson's Cold Cure Soup. In this one I would substitute a good amount of fresh ginger for the jalapenos.

This gave me acid reflex but killed the cold

You Will Get Better Soup--as in almost any soup recipe is better than this one. After dinner my daughter's first comment was: Do you have any Tums? I should have read the cooking notes before making this one.

This worked like a charm for me. And honestly I was so sick I couldn’t taste any of it anyway. I have saved it for use every time I fall I’ll.

I think the comments are part of what helps the cure. Everytime we say ‘You will get better soup’ we laugh. That said, it is delicious. I made only a half recipe but I will make the rest today. And yes, my nose stopped running.
