A combination of pungent horseradish and sweet ketchup make up the foundation of this classic cocktail sauce, which is seasoned with lemon juice, hot sauce and a dash of Worcestershire. Drizzle it on a shrimp cocktail or dab it sparingly on raw seafood. A little of this assertive mixture goes a long way.

Using Heinz Chili Sauce instead of ketchup makes a more interesting texture.

Been making cocktail sauce with fresh horseradish for a long time. Here in Houston, folks tend to like it on the spicy side and I tend to use a heavier ratio of horseradish to ketchup; also a LOT of Tabasco. For a twist, one can use Maggi sauce rather than “wooster” sauce. Soy sauce bends it another direction as well.

While Cocktail Sauce is delicious with shrimp, IMO it overpowers the flavor of the oysters. Better to use a mignonette or, my favorite, just fresh lemon juice and prepared horseradish (and Tabasco).

i've made this with local quality ketchup , siracha, worcherster, lime juice + seasoning.next time i would likely use store bought horseraddish or blitz homemade with hand mixer. coarse texture of grated horseradish does not hurt it but i woud prefer smooth texture. otherwise it is perfect recipe. i have eyballed the ratio due to small quantity and it turned out perfect!

Works well with Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup. Also made a version with the Reduced-Sugar Ketchup and a small amt of red-pepper flakes, M&B chili powder, Tabasco, ground cumin, and minced garlic to approximate the version suggested by John in the notes using Heinz Chili Sauce and was happy with that also.

Simple and perfect. I didn't change a thing.
