At Gotham Bar and Grill in Manhattan, the house lemonade is flavored with fresh ginger and whatever berries are in season. The ginger lends a peppery note to the combination, whether strawberries, raspberries or both are used. As with any lemonade, serve it as cold as you can stand. —Melissa Clark

Preparation

  1. Step 1

In a large saucepan over high heat, combine sugar and ginger with 8 cups water. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Boil for 15 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Transfer from heat, and let cool for 15 minutes. Strain through a fine sieve, discarding solids, and refrigerate until well chilled.

  3. Step 3

Set aside about a third of the berries for garnish. In a blender or food processor, process remaining berries until smooth. Strain puree through a mesh sieve, pressing berries with back of a wooden spoon to extract as much juice as possible. Discard solids.

  4. Step 4

In a pitcher, combine ginger syrup, strained berries and lemon juice. Serve over ice, garnished with reserved berries and lemon slices.

I HIGHLY recommend this recipe! It’s delicious and has a nice kick to it that is perfect for a summer drink.

Absolutely delicious combo! I added the syrup slowly and found that in a half batch I still had about a cup left when it was sweet enough for me. The ginger syrup is great in other drinks though!

This was very tasty, but a little bit too sweet. It was a lot of work squeezing all the lemons but added a lovely tart flavor. Next time I would definitely add way less sugar, it didn’t need quite so much.
