Ingredients
- 1bag chamomile tea
- 1bag lemon-zinger tea
- 2bags Darjeeling
- 1bag English breakfast tea
- 2bags black-currant tea
- 6slices orange plus ½ an orange
- 6slices lemon plus ½ a lemon
- 4sprigs mint
Preparation
- Step 1
Bring 10 cups water to boil. Add all the tea and steep 5 minutes.
- Step 2
In a container large enough to hold tea and ice, put lots of ice. Add lemon and orange slices and pour steeped tea over ice.
- Step 3
Squeeze in the orange and lemon halves and add mint sprigs.
- Step 4
Serve - over ice, if desired - in tall glasses decorated with lemon twists and mint.

This wonderful recipe has graced many events in our life since I found it in the NYT, perhaps in the late 1980s? Over time, I have added more herbal fruit tea and subtracted the Darjeeling and English breakfast to reduce the caffeine. When our son was teaching sailing lessons in hot, sultry Virginia, in exchange for rides home from the marina, he offered his buds a shower and this iced tea, They would polish off 2-3 gallons a week. Now retired in Maine, we garnish it with mint from our garden.
Any combination of tea bags works. The ice dilutes it a lot - best to let the tea cool to room temperature before pouring over ice.
Perfect for those who dislike commercial, overly sweet iced teas or the bitter, English tea only iced teas. Serve with sugar syrup on the side for those who like theirs a bit sweeter.
Fabulous! I really enjoyed this recipe for two reasons: 1. It's full of flavour! 2. It doesn't have sugar, and is therefore gently sweet from the fruit, just the way I like it!
This is delicious. I made as written except with three Lipton teabags in lieu of Darjeeling and English Breakfast. I don’t even like iced tea.
