    Melt the butter in a large heavy skillet. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook over medium-low heat, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Turn the apples carefully with a spatula as they cook. Apples will be tender and still hold their shape.

Wasn't able to find Jonathan so I used McIntosh. Not sure if that made a huge difference. But it seemed to take longer than 10 minutes for the apples to become tender ... how thin should these slices be? The flavoring was pretty good, but they did turn mushy.

My mother always said Jonathans were the best baking apple, but they are hard to find.
