While Americans content themselves with Rudolph and Frosty, rural Austrians revere a more outré member of the holiday pantheon: Krampus, the malevolent goat-horned demon. A pre-Christian holdover, he wields birch branches and rusty chains, enacting a sort of good cop, bad cop routine with Old St. Nick. The Bohemian Spritz (a creation of Vandaag's Katie Stipe) is a light, fizzy wine drink with compellingly arboreal undercurrents, provided by pine and elderflower cordials. It is ideal for welcoming the long nights, for putting the Krampus back in Christmas. —Steven Stern

I'd never tried Zirbenz Stone Pine Liqueur, but thought the recipe looked rather festive and a brilliant addition to a Christmas brunch. Indeed, this cocktail is refreshing and a good alternative for wine drinkers who don't prefer liquor. I'll keep this recipe for specific occasions. As for the Zirbenz, tasting it neat, I thought it more like the love child of Campari and Pine Sol. We will be enjoying this bottle for many Christmases to come.

Made with Zirbenz Stone Pine Liqueur of the Alps, which smelled very piney and interesting but tasted (neat) a bit like what I imagine Pine Sol might. Mixed with all the other ingredients, it made a very tasty and refreshing spritzer. I think I'd enjoy drinking it more in the summer, however.

Pine Sol - yum!

@Connie Have you tried either?
